Research on COR

COR has now been used in lower, middle, and upper level college classes for the past four years and has consistently been shown to improve students' understanding of basic scientific concepts as well as their appreciation of research methods.

When compared to a class taught with traditional methods, COR-instructed students scored significantly higher in a hands-on laboratory assignment where they were required to design, conduct, and write-up their own observational research study. This suggests that COR helped these students to grasp the basic concepts and apply them more effectively. Furthermore, the COR-instructed class rated the usefulness of conducting research more highly than the group taught without COR.

In another study, students showed significant increases in confidence on topics such as conducting Chi Square analysis and assessing interrater reliability. There was also a significant increase in student post-test scores after using COR; this was despite the fact that students were asked to calculate Chi Square without the benefit of formulas or computers.

Results from a usability analysis showed that students felt that both the Lessons and the Case Study were attractive, interesting, and easy to use. Overall, students felt strongly that COR was a valuable addition to their class and that they now understood the application of observational techniques in much more depth.
